Set in Rome in 44 BC, the play depicts the moral dilemma of Brutus as he joins a conspiracy led by Cassius to murder Julius Caesar to prevent him from becoming dictator of Rome. Following Caesar's death, Rome is thrust into a period of civil war, and the republic the conspirators sought to preserve is lost forever.

Although the play is named Julius Caesar, Brutus speaks more than four times as many lines as the title character; and the central psychological drama of the play focuses on Brutus' struggle between the conflicting demands of honour, patriotism, and friendship.

When a triumphant war hero becomes ambitious to be crowned king, assassination seems the only option. Even the noblest of motives proves to be misguided, however, when the power struggle increases after his death.

The plot is derived from the Greek-Roman celebrity biography by Thomas North, translated by Plutarch, and historical materials from the Anthony Civil War. The main opponent of Anthony in the play is Octavian who is also a member of the last three-headed alliance. The play is characterized by a quick switch between the emotional, imaginative Alessandro and the simple, pragmatic Roman scene.

Many people think that Cleopatra in this play is one of the most complex female characters described by Shakespeare [1]. She is often portrayed as a vanity-loving and pretentious character, which can always arouse the audience's scornful attitude, but at the same time Shawon also gave her and Anthony's tragic majesty.
